Resources for Episode 019, 020 & 021: Understanding Addiction

Addiction: Banquets in the Grave: Finding Hope by Edward T. Welch: A must read book for finding hope.

Christian Recovery Ministries and Programs: These 5 words represent a mixed bag. However, two of the programs we recommend (in order) are below.

Re: Generation Recovery. Regen, as some call it, not to be confused with a secular outfit by a similar name is a Christian based 12 step type program that is more biblically based than those which follow the AA model.  Here’s an overview and also a website listing US Churches offering this ministry. This model avoids the trap that addicts fall into of not reintegrating into the larger local church. Click here to learn more.

Churches using the Re: Generation Model:

Celebrate Recovery. Celebrate Recovery is another church based 12 step program that does a lot of good. However, we believe the better option is Re: Generation. Click here to learn more.

Other:

Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance: While this book is not exclusively about addiction it provides insights for those who struggle with family members addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Success Rates of Rehab Programs: It’s not a matter or location or finances. It’s about the addict’s desire to change. We do not concur with many of the interpretive conclusions of this article. However, it can prove insightful. But the sad fact is that success rates (without conversion to Christianity) hover around 20%, regardless of program length.

Note: The above list is not exhaustive but represents a head start that is the tip of the iceberg.
